6. Shifting Day

Shifting day was a busy day. Children hauling bundles to waiting carts, barking dogs, and crying babies were everywhere. There were tears and hugs and shouts of, "See you come spring!"

As Brinn's father loaded their pack horses, her mother and Martilia hugged her tight.

"Be good for Healer Talsha. Listen well," her mother said, tucking a stray hair behind her ear. Brinn could see she was trying not to cry.

"Don't worry, Mother. I will do well." She kissed her mother's cheek. She turned to Martilia. "Take care of Mother and Father." She lightly tweaked her little sister's nose, and Martilia nodded silently.

"All ready," her father called. "Up you go," and he boosted her up onto the horse with her bags.

"Be careful!" her mother called. Brinn turned and blew her a kiss.
