A Set of Cards

"We shouldn't do this," said Rudsis. "I can feel we shouldn't. It's a mistake."

Afena was tired of replying to that argument over, and over, and over again. She wasn't mad, or angry. Just tired. As amicably as she could, she said, "We've already gone through this, Rudsis. I can assure you that if we were making a mistake, we'd have a sign of it."

"Because Selen would come and tell us?"

"Yes. I've told you she can look into the many futures."

"What if Selen is tricking us? What if she's with Treni?"

It was a valid point, but one that only showed how desperate Rudsis was to find something he could say that would make Afena take him with her.

"She could have let you die, Rudsis. There would have been no point in telling you how to survive the ubtirs if she wanted to truly stop you."

"This doesn't feel right, witch."

"It doesn't have to feel right for it to be right."

"I can help you."
