War Councils

They sat at the fire of the chief's house, looking at each other in silence for a long, long while, next to each other, holding the other's hand.

"What did you do to the chief?" Rudsis asked.

"She's sleeping," Treni answered. "I'm influencing her in dreams. When she wakes up, she should be on our side as well."

He nodded, and the silence between them stretched on for another while, in which the fire crackled soothingly.

"Would you like me to leave you for the night?" she finally asked.

"No."

"Would you prefer to talk about this in your dreams."

For whatever reason, it was always easier for him to say everything he wanted to say in dreams. "Yes, please."

They lay down on the same bed they'd been using almost every night, but Treni looked like herself this time. On their sides, one facing the other, she kissed him, and waited for Rudsis to fall asleep before slipping into his mind.
