"You're Esprit, and you'll be Agera," her new mistress Shion named the last two demons enthusiastically, dusting her hands theatrically. Four hundred and forty yellow demons were summoned and given decent material bodies and powerful names, making them a truly terrifying force. Yet, despite this, they were delegated to follow the whims of the least influential consort of the true ruler of Nazrick.
At the moment, Shion didn't even have any duties and was pretty much spending her days fighting whoever was showing up in the training area, considering her lack of responsibilities compared to the other two consorts.
After being one step away from total eradication, Carrera decided that the best approach was to stay quiet and obedient until she learned what her superiors considered amusing and what they found annoying. She could also use that time to study Nazarick and make herself irreplaceable. It's not like she was scared of her superior's husband; job security was paramount.
Shion, the third consort of Lord Momonga, was considered a battle maniac who was always looking for reasons to punch people. She had heard that Shion possessed an extremely dangerous ultimate skill that could render her victims insane just by being in her proximity, assuming they were targeted.
"Now, let's go to the battle floor and test how strong you all are!" Shion announced, and a gate appeared before her.
Carrera nervously gulped and followed her superior, the demons following after her. She was somewhat of a battle maniac herself, though not particularly eager to jump into unwinnable fights, which this one would surely be. Fighting someone who could name over four hundred demons in a row wasn't her idea of a good time; she preferred a slightly less-than-equal fight.
The so-called training area was an immense stone circle with stone seats around the ring and a clear sky above. Grassland was visible in the distance. Demons of her line took their place at the arena's edge, with only Esprit and Agera remaining by her side, facing Shion.
Esprit was her closest confidant and partner in crime. She was a demoness barely younger than Carrera, and had taken the appearance of a young blonde woman with blue eyes. Her outfit consisted of a blue-red plaid skirt, a black tank top covered with a fur-lined hoodie, long black socks, and mint green slippers. Esprit shared her enthusiasm for carnage, hedonism, and slacking off, just generally enjoying life as she saw fit.
Agera was the polar opposite, best described as a dutiful stick in the mud and the voice of reason. As much as Carerra was annoyed to be lectured and held back, she had kept the centuries-old demon around for his unrivaled skills and calculating mind. In terms of looks, he was a middle-aged man with white hair speckled with gold, brushed back, and tied up in a knot. He had a long white beard and a thin, wrinkled face. However, his sharp eyes and straight, clean posture showed no signs of aging.
Shion glanced around, assessing her new subordinates with an almost disinterested gaze. They were relatively strong compared to the majority of Tempest's population, but overall, nothing to write home about, just the run-of-the-mill A to S-ranked monsters who, at best, could give her a decent warmup before she sparred with the world-enders or the high executors, who breached into Special S ranks.
"All of you come at me and give me your best!" Shion roared a challenge, her face twisting into a smirk as she assumed a battle position, her suit straining to not tear as the oni woman flexed her muscles. Lord Pero had once called her a sleeper build, whatever that meant. Her best guess was he meant she could easily hide her muscular build under her sharp suit. Unlike her two fellow consorts, she was pretty heavily muscled. However, considering their unreal strength, Shalltear and Albedo should have been just as toned, they were just more magically inclined.
Carrera was first to jump in action, tossing an annihilation net, nuclear magic weaved into a netlike structure designed to either entrap or utterly destroy her opponent, at her superior and aiming for Shion's head with her bare fist, Esprit by her side, closing distance with a flying kick and their own barrage of magic bullets.
She only hit air. Shion had moved out of harm's way with a blur, cackling. Next thing Carrera knew, a boot had connected with her stomach, and she was sent flying into the air. The pain was a bit too real for her liking. She stopped her momentum and dodged the other demons tossed around like ragdolls, who had followed shortly after her.
Shion wasn't using any skills or magical abilities, just moving with barely perceivable speed and distributing kicks and punches liberally to her opponents. The yellow demons hit the arena's shield rapidly, some getting up and charging again and others observing the fight for any openings, preparing their magics.
There were none. Shion was violence personified. When someone showed hesitation or cowardice, she broke bones and ripped tendons. When someone ran, she kicked them with extra brutality.
'That woman is a monster. No wonder Lord Momonga took her as a consort.' She couldn't help but admire the raw power of her superior as she clocked a straight punch into the arms, glassing the sand under her feet with the sheer force of its impact. Carrera blocked the next punch with crossed arms, and the redirected force had shattered the glassy ground into grains of sharp sand.
"Not bad. You can stand your ground," Shion complimented.
First success. Shion would see her as less of a failure. { Distract her! } She issued an order to Agera and Esprit, and both demons jumped into action. Esprit unleashed nuclear magic upon Shion while Agera attempted to cut off the oni's head.
Shion didn't flinch when the magic hit her and caught the blade between her fingers with a smirk, clearly happy with the coordinated attack. And that was her opening. Carrera had spent the last two centuries perfecting the move she planned to use against Leon on their next one-on-one battle: black hole punch. She would create a thin layer of a black hole with traces of the void around her fist and drive it in her opponent's face with all the power she could muster, strong enough to give even Demon Lord Leon trouble in their never-ending battles.
She had a fraction of a second before Shion realized the trap and reacted, but that was all she needed. Carrera used teleportation alongside a flap of her wings to throw the punch with all the speed she could. Her fist cleanly connected with Shion's cheek, the resulting shockwave knocking away all the demons, including Agera and Espirit.
Shion's head jerked, her lip split, and her skin broke. However, she regenerated before her head snapped back in place. The next hit didn't land. The Oni caught Carrera's fist in her palm with a devilish grin.
"That was a good one! Points for that!" She exclaimed. Then, Carrera found herself an immaterial form floating in hell.
'What, she killed me?' Carrara looked around, confused, before she was pulled back into her now physical body.
"Whoops! I hit you a bit too hard, but hey, if you can dish it out, you can take it, am I right?" Shion continued with an awkward laugh and outstretched hand.
Carrera accepted the offer and was pulled to her feet as her half-destroyed, near-skeletal body regenerated.
"Hey, as long as I get the next body." Carrera giggled in response.
"That's the spirit." Shion slapped her back and then addressed the rest. "And you wimps better start training! I won't hold back for long."
The next thing she knew, she stood in lord Momonga's quarters behind her mistress, Agera, and Esprit kneeling by her side.
"So they are decent for a warm-up, but nothing too impressive. I will train them to be more useful!" Shion spoke enthusiastically as the Overlord listened intently to his consort, a pen in one hand and multiple documents opened on the table.
Carrera noted that Shion looked somewhat nervous, which, considering the overwhelming power of Lord Momonga and how brutal he could be if displeased, was understandable, but still weird. Carrera knew she was considered cruel by most of the world, but even she was kind to her lovers, at least while they were hers, and usually kept them enthusiastic and eager to please.
"That is good to hear. Shion, you seem nervous." Momonga commented.
"No! I mean… I just thought… Now that I have a team, I can take on some duties. I already spoke with Albedo, and she doesn't want me back as her assistant." Her tone grew more insistent as she slammed her right foot against the floor with a crack, likely breaking the wooden floor. "I don't want to just sit around and fight for fun! People are already talking about me behind my back!"
'Oh, she isn't afraid of the Lord one bit. But why demand work… Dammit, we'll be given work to do! That's no fun.' Carrera cursed, lamenting Shion's shortsighted desire for duties. After all, life is best when one can do whatever they want.
"I see." Momonga paused, then pulled out a folder from his inventory and put it on his table. "There is one thing I could entrust you with."
"I am ready!" Shion snatched the folder from the table and dug into its contents as Momonga continued.
"These are plans for the dragon palace and private resorts for us and the rest of the guild members. I need you to pick construction companies capable of dealing with projects of such magnitude. Geld, unfortunately, is busy and won't be available for at least a year as his teams are busy with more critical projects. You can ask Shalltear and Albedo for advice."
"Sure. I'll make sure nothing goes wrong!" Shion beamed with pride. She quickly leaned over his desk to kiss her husband's bare skull.
The next moment, she turned around and created a portal before walking through briskly. Carrera and her two aides froze at what they saw.
The portal opened into Shalltear's office at UTC headquarters. The vampire was drilling Ultima about the ongoings of the trading company and didn't seem pleased that Shion had barged in without any warning. Her mistress didn't seem bothered about the chaos and annoyance she was causing in her wake, though, stepping forward with confidence. Four more purple demons were present in the spacious, well-lit office, going through the bookshelves filled with folders and stacks of documents.
"Momonga told me I can come to you about this!" Shion inserted herself before the vampire and primordial.
Shalltear grumbled something incomprehensible under her breath, snapped her fingers, and pointed at one of the shelves.
Ultima teleported to the shelf, grabbed a folder, and returned to her seat as she asked, "What am I looking for?"
"List of construction companies affiliated with UTC and their addresses," Shalltear replied, then turned her attention back to her taller peer, standing uncomfortably close to the young vampire.
"Got it… Oh, here it is." Ultima flipped through papers with lightning speed and pulled out a few pages, handing them to Shion.
"Thanks." Shion grabbed the list, "So, where am I getting money for this?"
"Ask my father; this is a government project, not a private one." Shalltear was growing increasingly annoyed, the primordial purple demon Ultima backing off.
"Sure. I'll just go-" Shion was already ready to bother the next person unfortunate enough to cross her on her warpath when Shalltear screeched. "Wait!"
"I don't need you bothering Dad! I'll send you the account details later through my agents. Go pester the orcs instead!" Shaltear waved for Shion to leave.
'Looks like this will go on for the rest of the day.' Carrera already regretted being made a servant. There was no doubt in her mind that within a day or two, she would be sent on a list of errands with a poorly thought-out plan to annoy people, who she shouldn't annoy, just because it looked like Shion had barely any idea how to proceed with the duties she desired to receive.
But it was what she would have to deal with in the near future. Perhaps she could persuade Shion to take an interest in military training or something, so at least they could all fight. Some of her demons had already reported that Nazarick's military was huge, rivaling that of most of the world combined, barring the most ancient powerhouses. Surely there was work to do there.
