Selmas feels the air leave his lungs as he watches Jigen disappear. He wants to scream, but he doesn’t think that he has the voice to do it.
“Jigen!” Aisling yells, her voice unaffected by the flames around them. “Jigen!”
“Go!” a faint voice says. “I’m fine!”
Selmas squints through the smoke and flames, just able to make out Jigen’s figure stumbling away from the wall of fire and back up the hill to where he had been before. His face is slightly sooty, but he looks uninjured otherwise.
“I can’t get through!” he yells, his voice almost unheard over the moan of the undead and the crackle of the fire burning everything it can catch.
“Stay there!” Aisling yells. Her eyes are watering a little, though Selmas isn’t sure if it’s because she almost lost her brother, or if the smoke is getting to her. His own eyes sting slightly. “We’ll be back for you!”
