“You can’t do that. Your father assigned her to me!” Count Thorn said. 


“I can, and I will. Princess Lila, would you like to go to Starfall and swear an oath to my father?” Prince Acheron said, turning towards her. “It is your choice, as decreed by my father. All former monarchs and their heirs are protected and free to join him whenever they voluntarily agree to do so.” 


Princess Lila raised her chin defiantly and looked at Count Thorn in the eyes. 


“I would,” she said. “Your Grace, I was not made aware I had a choice. Count Thorn never informed me I could go swear an oath of allegiance to Emperor Darien. I would have done so a long time ago if I knew.” 


“So not only are you unfit to keep her safe, you deliberately lied and disobeyed my father’s orders,” Prince Acheron said.
