Chapter 1:

I hit the ground, struggling for breath, my lungs burning. My everything burning. I couldn't move.

I couldn't move on.

A boot hit my ribs, "Move." Its owner backed up as it drove what little air was still in my lungs out.

Struggling up, I coughed, forcing myself up onto my knees before another kick hit my shoulder, sending me onto my side.

"Move, weakling. Or I'll end this experiment and have it over with."

Coughing, I struggled back onto my feet and started moving through the scorching hot dust again.

My… teacher… easily followed along. Bet the absolute bastard even had his cloak whipping in the wind.

As much as I likely should, I maybe shouldn't hate him. He did technically save my life after I arrived here.

Anyone else here would have just cut me down, or, if they were feeling merciful, sold me into slavery. But not Master Selkath.

He didn't want something that easy. No, he wanted to prove a theory. That assuming enough time, anyone with even a tiny fraction of talent could become good enough to graduate with his training.

To become a Sith.

When they found me half dead in the desert, he had a perfect test subject. Out of shape, nearsighted. From a life where there was little war, little technology, little… little torment.

The perfect subject for his studies.

"Faster!"

Pain crackled across my back and I hit the desert again, everything fading for a split second before snapping back into what passed for focus.

Six months.

One month of being taught how to speak Basic well enough to understand what he wanted me to do. Five months of learning how to read, how to not get murdered walking the hallways. How to not be killed by the wildlife.

How to withstand pain.

I hated him.

More than I'd hated anything before in my life. As I stared out over the very blurry and very dusty desert, I realized something with absolute clarity.

More certain than gravity. More certain than the sun beating down on my bare back.

Selkath would die.

I would murder him. I would rip his eyes out and make him eat them!

Move! A sudden feeling of danger caused me to roll to the side, moving faster than I had ever moved before.

A blade of ruby red energy stabbed the ground where my head had been, the saber crackling slightly at the dust drifting against it as it left a glowing swath of molten glass in the ground.

"Good," Selkath said as he pulled his saber back, the wind bringing the hood of his cloak back, revealing his dark, bald head and the white lines tattooed along the sides in angular patterns, "You felt it. The Force."

I struggled to get back onto my feet before something caught the light of the sun and landed by my feet. I carefully bent down and picked it up.

My glasses.

Selkath turned his blade off, putting it back into his belt, "Your reward. You have two hours to get back to the Academy or you miss dinner."

With that, he turned and walked away towards the ravine in the distance. It took half the day for us to get out here.

As I put my glasses on, I saw him quickly disappear into the distance at a quick and easy run. First thing I'd seen clearly for weeks.

There was no way I would be able to get back to the academy before dark.

Things came out after dark.

I looked around. Correction. Things mostly came out after dark. There were… things that could go invisible. I had encountered them at times.

Almost gotten eaten twice since I arrived. Taking a slow, deep, breath, I started to walk. Burning sun. No shadow. Dryness and dust.

No water since this morning.

Fuck making it back before sunset. My head was killing me. Thirsty. Selkaths dark shape disappeared into the heat shimmer of the desert.

That was my focus. That was why I was going to make it back. Not wanting to live. Not to prove the other… students… wrong about me making it.

Not even out of pure fucking stubbornness.

No… no…

I wanted to stab him with his own fucking lightsaber!
