The sounds of chaos echoed through the night lit only by 3 large moons and a raging flame consuming a small town. For the sun had long since set and the cold embrace of night had taken its hold. The walls and gates surrounding the settlement were the first set ablaze trapping the inhabitants inside. It was a cruel awakening for most who were fast asleep only to be awoken by the destruction of their home and inevitable death.
A large wooden tower collapsed, falling into another building further spreading the fire towards the center of town. There weren't very many structures that could be seen still standing and the ones that were wouldn't be for long.
The shadow of a massive figure with outstretched wings flew overhead blotching out a moon before disappearing over the mountains to the east.
The few villagers who had escaped gathered at the top of a nearby hill looking at what was left of there village. It all happened so fast no one new for sure what had caused all this destruction.
"It was a d-dragon!!" A man yelled causing the rest to panic once more.
"I saw it too, it was massive" another joined in silencing the doubt a few others held.
An older man pushed his way to the front of the group. The villagers recognized him as the chief and cleared the way for him.
"Quiet!!" he growled slightly wincing due to the burned flesh covering his upper right shoulder.
"We need to calm down… whatever it was it is gone now. Was anyone able to see anything else or where this monstrosity came from" the chief spoke looking out at the remnants of his people.
Once again there was silence not a word was spoken as none of them new anymore. Then suddenly they heard footsteps coming from the forest as the figure of a small girl with blonde hair could be seen emerging from the tree line. Tears streamed down her face as she stumbled forward. The villagers being spooked took a few steps back.
"Emily?" The chief recognized her as one of the guards daughters.
He quickly picked her up with his good arm trying to comfort her.
"T-they're…Dead. It killed…them" she said between sobs.
Many felt her pain as they too had lost loved ones that night and out of the 70 villagers only 9 remained.
The chief held her tighter as a tear rolled down his cheek. He pulled off his cloak draping it over her to keep her warm.
"We were…getting w-water and…and everything s-started to shake"
She pointed her finger slightly north of the village towards the waterfall drawing there gaze.
"Then the mountain cracked…the ground swallowed m-mommy…and then the m-monster came out and ate d-da…" she burst into tears again unable to continue.
They all looked over to where she pointed noticing the massive crack in the mountain that opened into a cavern. It had appeared out of nowhere and caused a large amount of damage to the area. The river ran into it disappearing from view. They couldn't make out much being half a mile away but as they stared into the darkness it seemed to stare back. A shiver ran through the chief as he gulped nervously.
"What in the…world?"
