Chapter 20: Dreamless Sleep

It was not until very late that they stopped to make camp. Daylight had long given way to night, turning the Striding invisible beside the road, though Vix could still hear it galloping thunderously along through the dark.

There was hardly any moon, mostly hidden as it was behind a wall of grumbling thunderclouds. They flashed dangerously in the distance, followed by a rumbling boom of thunder that shook Vix all the way through.

Caine began making up the camp for the night in the shelter of a craggy outcrop of stone. Sturdy-looking trees were growing amid the cracks, their roots trailing down the rock as thick as weeds.

“So we’re agreed,” Vix was saying as she moved to help. “We’ve ruled out vampires, hobgoblins, bugbears, and lycanthropes. That leaves only warlocks, witches, night elves, and... sprites. Evil ones, most likely.”

“No,” Caine barked grumpily. “We are most certainly not agreed. Mostly due to the fact that none of those things are real!”
