Chapter 28: Dry Works

At last, Vix’s feet struck the ground, producing a hollow ringing that filled the trench around her. She watched, heart in her mouth, as Caine descended after her. When he touched the ground as well, she finally let her breath out.

Caine looked all around him. “What in all the gods’ names was this place used for?” he asked. “It’s like some enormous warren! A bloody labyrinth.”

“At least there’s only one path forward,” Vix said, trying to sound encouraging, for she did not feel it inside.

The sun was little more than a watery speck high above, allowing for a slant of light. Soon, Vix guessed, it would be lost from view completely.

Ahead, the path twisted off into the distance, grungy, pale-walled, and dark. The air was stale and musty, making it difficult for Vix to breathe normally.

A shiver went through her as she stared down it. Then, she took as deep of a breath as her lungs would allow and before she could change her mind, she started forward.
