Chapter 56: Soot and Ash

Vix peered closer at the object she held in her palm, Belkin hovering at her shoulder. It was a clear glass ball, just wide enough to fit into her hand. The smooth surface was covered in faint indentations, which ran together in random patterns across the ball.

“Are they symbols?” Vix asked, running a thumb along the lines.

“It’s difficult to say,” Belkin said. He heaved a small sigh. “Regardless, it’s doubtful something this old will actually...”

He yelped as a spurt of blue sparks shot off from the ball. Vix flinched, expecting burning pain. But the sparks dissipated harmlessly as soon as they touched her skin.

“What in the world?” Belkin muttered, adjusting his spectacles and peering closer at the ball.

Vix laughed shakily. “It seems like it does work after all, professor. Professor?”

He did not seem to hear her. His eyes grew wider as he stared deep into the ball. “Of course!” he breathed.

“What?”
