Chapter 58: Promise

Vix stared at the corpse before her feet. A man’s face peered out at her from the tangle of metal and cloth, like a pale beacon. It was the only sign that he had ever been human at all.

Vix felt a sudden surge of pity for the sad creature. Bending, she gently closed his staring eyes.

Turning away from the body, she went back to Caine. She found herself staggering as though gravely wounded, though the orb had healed all the damage done. It was as though her body could not accept what had just happened to it.

Shaking, Vix dropped heavily to her knees. Caine lay on the ground, eyes staring wide at the gray clouds rumbling above. Vix felt tears building at her eyes, but she brushed them away roughly.

‘I didn’t kill him. If the orb can take life, it can give it, too.’ She pressed the sapphire ball tight against his chest. “Please,” she whispered aloud, her voice raw.
