Chapter 50: Those Europeans

Hallie’s mother was the first to regain her ability to speak. Hallie could only imagine what she was thinking, a good church-going woman plonked into the midst of this drunkenness and debauchery.

“I don’t know what’s going on in here,” Vivian began, “but we didn’t raise you to be like this, Hallie!”

“I didn’t do anything wrong! And anyways, I didn't know you were invited,” Hallie fired back.

“How can we not be invited to our own daughter’s housewarming?” Vivian replied.

Hallie would have loved for them to be shocked and appalled like this a mere couple of months ago, but things had changed so much since Luke came into her life. She wanted her parents to keep thinking of her as the good daughter.
