How could I let this happen? The moment I open my eyes, I’m filled with heavy dread. Of course my body would choose to give out during a date with Alexander, the one person who doesn’t know I’m sick!

I can’t even imagine what must be going through his head. It takes me a second to realize he’s no longer next to me in bed. I vaguely remember falling asleep with his strong arm around me, but now the space next to me is empty.

I let out a groan and throw my face into the pillows.

This changes everything. The universe is punishing me for keeping such a vital secret from Alexander, and I know I deserve it.

“Sweetie?”

My ears perk up at Mom’s familiar voice, and I glance toward the doorway. Her expression is hesitant, though a comforting smile sits on her lips.

“I didn’t hear you come in last night…”

“I don’t remember coming in last night,” I elaborate, earning a concerned look from Mom.

“Were you drunk?”
