"Please, don't go," I whispered as I started kissing her neck once again.

She caressed my head but started saying the reasons why she knew it was wrong.

"We can't do this, Triton," she told me. "It is killing us, and it is destroying our families. Imagine how the pack would react if they were to discover us here? If they discovered that you were in the woods with me, kissing and caressing? As much as I love you and as much as we are mates, we are also enemies, Triton."

"No!" I said, my face still buried in her neck. "I don't care what they think! I don't care what will happen! All I want is you."

I signed my letter to my mate and put a little heart above the "i" in my name. I thought it was really cute, so I hope he did too. I stuck it in an envelope and started to head downstairs and out the door. But, I was stopped by my dad. He looked very serious, and he rubbed his temple as he seemed to sort out the thoughts in his head. 


I tried to be polite and wait for him to finish his thinking and say what he wanted to, but I really wanted to get out to give my mate his letter. I moved about anxiously as I shifted from one foot to the next. Then, finally, he looked at me. His brown eyes were clouded, and his brow was wrinkled in anxiety. 


"Ariana, will you come to my office, please?" He said to me, gesturing to his private study. I followed his lead. I found it so strange how he acted. He seemed to be acting almost like a school teacher giving me some punishment. Or some counselor was taking me aside to address my attitude. I sat in one of his big wooden chairs.
