Chapter 37: Just This Once

*** Triton's POV***

I saw her eyes shimmering as tears came to the surface. My tail, which was wagging before, began to stop. My ears drooped, and I felt my soul break. I wanted to stop those tears from falling. I wanted to take her in my arms and cuddle her. I wanted her to know that the very last thing I ever wanted was to hurt her.

After a long moment of gazing at each other, she left the window to my surprise. I was worried she was angry and left me standing there. I sighed a low wolf whimper, and I tried to hide my emotions as I turned to leave. But, just as I was about to leave, I heard a screen door screech open and closed with a quiet clap against the house.

I turned about hopefully and saw my beautiful mate standing in the light of the moon. She wore a loose-fitting white nightgown, and her hair fell like a lovely waterfall over her shoulders. She looked like a beautiful saint from an old cathedral painting. Her eyes, though sunken, were smiling at me.
