I looked at Carol's distraught eyes. I wanted to comfort her better. Even though she liked my confidence and attitude, I could see she was nervous about what would become of her. I wanted to reassure my friend better. But, other than seeming assured of myself, I could not think of what to say. I looked down at my thumbs and twiddled them together. 


"What will become of Amber?" I asked her, unsure about whether I should ask that or not. I was afraid she would be upset with me. But she was not. She just seemed distraught and upset. Her eyes darted through the cafeteria as if she was searching for something. Then, finally, they rested on my face.


"It's just, her parents are thinking of running away," she told me. "She said they want to escape this dreadful place and these dreadful wolves. And, I can't stop that from happening. I know they will go, regardless of what I say or do. I just need to see if I can stop this fighting."
