I saw my father's face fall when he heard these words, but he was silent. Triton's father, however, was not silent at all. He jumped to his feet and did not even look at me when he said to Triton, "and you expect me to accept her as your mate?"

"Ariana, is this true?" my father asked me in an aghast voice. "He is your mate, and you accept him?"


"What else would you have me do?" I asked.

"No, father," I said firmly. "I debated for a long time about my duty to my pack versus my duty to him and my heart. I could not betray my pack, father.
