Be Gentle

The rustling of movement provided by the other habitants of the barracks, proved to be the cause of Shu's disturbance. Fighting the strong urge to return back to her fitful slumber, she curled her small tanned fingers into a fist retracting herself out of the sanctuary her subconscious provided her.

Knowing that she had no luxury of dawdling, her eyes opened to gaze at the various rows of cots that lined up with her own. Disappointment flooding into her soul as people roused from their sleep, serving as a reminder of the hardships that many would bear throughout the day.

Dragging her small frame out of the barracks, she headed for the river looking up at the sky that held a vast array of mixed colors from the transformation of night to day.

Fresh air proceeded to waft over her, as it created a soothing effect to her very being.

Loud noises disrupted Shu from the peace the morning brings. Focusing towards the cluster of people crowded by the river she heard murmurs and shrieks, as masculine laughter filled the air.

Moving closer she took note of a group of adolescent boys laughing hysterically from their banter against the clear liquid from the stream.

Feeling annoyed at the slight disruption, Shu ventured onward moving to a space of less people.

Rolling up her sleeves for better access to the grim of yesterdays excess labor she ignored the stares she received from the people around her. Cupping a handful of water she washed her forearms, while also overhearing two ladies jabber about nonsense a short distance away from her.

"Can you believe those wretched boys?! Their level of education is clearly shown by their lack of consideration."

" I agree. 'tis tragic that we can't reprimand them. They are General Xia's project after all, laying a finger on them would mean choosing death."

"Even so, their audacity makes me wanna-." Her voice became muffled, as the other lady covered her mouth with her hand.

"Look look, there's the mixed blood wench! Ugh how despicable. Look at the mess of curls atop her head. Oh she gazed at us. I get a shudder just looking into her colorless eyes. Come lets depart."

Shu paid them no mind, finding a twinge of curiosity surging through her at how the young group of men could ever be considered as 'projects'.

Glancing towards the direction of the young men, she took note of the fluid movement that was created by their developing muscles.

Finding them preoccupied with the water, she berated herself for allowing her curiosity to wander. Knowing that their business had nothing to do with her own way of living, Shu proceeded in her endeavor.

Pouring water over her head to try and tame the mass of curls that always seemed to stand out and cause trouble for her, her small hands aggressively tried to untangle the knots that formed overnight.

"Be gentle."

Her fingers froze from their ministrations for just a moment, mistakenly believing that those words were addressed to her. Continuing her aggressive method those words were heard once more.

"Be gentle." they spewed sounding more firm than the first time.

Looking towards the direction in which they came in, her grey eyes met those of hazel that contained an emotion akin to frustration.
