Confronting and Comforting

Rows of baskets were gathered by the time the rays of the sun had long receded over the vast green of the fields. Most slaves finally stretched out into full height, instead of crouching the way they had been since the beginning.

At present, only one guard remained, the same one that caused the scene earlier that day. Since the incident he had stayed quiet, trying to save face from his embarrassment. Thus, there he stood, with a look of concentration on his features, counting and recounting the produce retrieved by each worker.

Shu longed for him to reach her, as the sooner he checked her five baskets off, the faster she could head towards the area that distributed meals.

Therefore, as the guard analyzed her baskets he nodded his head in approval. Causing Shu's shoulders to release the tension that had been created from the day and focus her thoughts on the first meal that would be provided.

However, before she could depart the guards eyes unexpectedly met hers in a blank stare, a sneer making its way to his facial features, with the curl of his mouth being the quality that made his face easy to read.

"How old are you, girl?" he asked, his eyes never straying from her own.

"Nine this year, sir." Shu responded, though that was still in question.

" You will report too me first thing in the morning. I will instruct you based on Director Cou's directions. Understood?" his voice was firm, Shu praised the guard for his thoughtlessness for any other guard would have kept the girls working 'til the morrow to make up for their loss in criteria.

Shrugging away the relief she felt, Shu nodded her head, leaving the guard satisfied enough to move on to the next slave. However just before he could, Shu unexpectedly spoke just loud enough for him to hear.

Flashes of the beaten girl filling her mind as concern washed over her.

"How is the girl?" she asked.

The guard moved a step towards her grinning menacing. "How 'bout you tell me?" raising his hands to make it seem like he was going to do her harm.

Shu didn't flinch. This guard was already in a tight spot with Director Cou, another girl beaten up by his brutality would be seen as treating Cou's reprimanding as a joke.

He turned red. Understanding the consequences that would follow his actions. He breathed out trying to salvage the strength to control his temper.

"She's fine. Go to the medic if you want to see her."

Moving on to the next person that carried baskets, the blank stare of concentration washed over his features. Relieved by the slightly civil conversation she made her way out of the crowd of workers towards those that handed out food.

A loaf of bread and a sliver of cheese being handed to her from disgusted hands. Grabbing them almost eagerly, she headed into the darkness of the field, finding the area in which most people huddled in to be almost unwelcoming.

Being guided by the light the moon provided, she found solace in a area that concealed her being by a thicket.

Her gaze became filled by the sky at full display, enjoying the sight, she began to eat. Savoring the food with slow, but consistent chews, finding the view and nourishment to bring her great comfort.
