Chapter 19

Yelena woke and knew immediately that something was wrong. The keep was so silent that when she opened her windows, she discovered that she had slept in for later than was her custom, and the sun was well into the sky.

Opening the shutters only increased the sense of wrongness. The fields beyond the keep were all but empty of workers, although she could see the goat herd in the grasses with his crop like any other day. The courtyard below held only a group of young lads playing knuckles.

The blacksmith’s fires had been cold now for several weeks, since first him and then his apprentice had been taken by the Fae army, but there was normally a constant flow of traffic from village to keep, as tithe and trade was undertaken.

“Where is everyone?” She wondered, her eyes falling to the village. Chimney’s smoked, so there were people there.
