  Present Time

  Sylvin closed the door on the mage, and set his back to it, his eyes on the ground, searching his thoughts for a solution. “Dragon magic,” he said through his teeth. “F-king useless f-king Fae mages.”

  His scowl was fierce.

  “I have to heal them,” Yelena told him knowing the direction of his thoughts. “I can’t just stand by and allow my people to die if I can save them. Those boys,” she shook her head thinking of the young men who had passed and had been taken home for the last time the day before. “Perhaps I could have saved them if only I had known more about the balance… I cannot let more of my people die.”

  He lifted his silver-grey eyes to hers, the light catching in their facets. “If you do this, Yelena,” he said. “It will become known that you possess magic. Your household might keep the secret, but mine will not. Their loyalties are strong with the Fae kings.”

  “I know,” she swallowed hard. “What will they do to me, Sylvin… The Fae?”
