The fortress was more ruin than fortress. It was evident from the placement, at the peak of a cliff overlooking both land and ocean, that it had been one of the original buildings of the settlement, perhaps the original keep. Aeons of time had passed since its creation however, and its inhabitants had reshaped it from fortress watching shore, to pious place of prayer, and into its current use: prison of the weak.
Hospice of isolation might be the description favoured by the Fae, but it was not, Yelena thought. It was, for most, a place where the sick and frail were abandoned to die, unattended. For those wealthy enough to afford human slaves that were supervised sufficiently to ensure that they remained in attendance of the ailing – and a great many simply fled in the face of the ailment -then, perhaps, it was a place of recuperation.
Those, however, that recuperated, were small in number, and privileged in wealth and position.
