Chapter 69

  Present Day

Eustice had left a single candle burning within a glass casing in the bedchamber to welcome them back with after the evening meal and its festivities, threats, and machinations. Within moments of Yelena taking her seat after the dance with Macedius, Sylvin had returned to her side and sat silent and tense beside her for just long enough that the court had settled again and removed its collective eyes from them, and then he had taken her hand and led her from the chamber.

They had been silent on the walk back to the Silver Dragon’s chambers, each caught in their own thoughts, and now undressed by the light of the single candle without speaking.

Yelena brushed out her hair watching as the yellow candlelight shifted over Sylvin, catching on the old scars across his back, burnishing his silver hair in shades of gold and orange, her heart racing in her chest as it had done since Macedius had risen to his feet and demanded she dance.
