Present Day
Yelena rehearsed what she would say to her maids throughout the time that Eustice and Nareena attended to her, and only, finally, when she was ready to depart but for the dress, Yelena sent Nareena from the room on an errand and turned to face Eustice.
In the end, she did not need to say it. Eustice’s face crumpled. “No, My Lady,” she protested, but there was surrender to the tone.
Yelena swallowed heavily and she gestured helpless. “What will happen if I do not, Eustice?” She asked. “Sylvin will be killed.”
Eustice drew in a shuddering breath and after a long moment nodded, and she turned and went into the antechamber, returning after several long moments with the beautiful cloak and dress, and a delicate pair of slippers. She laid them upon the bed and then folded them with great care, before wrapping them in a cloth and knotting the corners to form a bundle.
