The Truth

The ride home to the farm was spent in silence, with Claire looking outside the window and Jonathan thinking of the future.

Once they parked at home, Jonathan asked Claire to come talk in the kitchen with him and her mother and somehow she got the feeling they were not going to be celebrating her heroics.

Once the whole family was seated around the kitchen table, with Claire on one side and her parents on the other, the lecture started.

"Claire, you know your mother and I have forbidden you from using your power in front of other people."

"I know, but this was an emergency, what was I supposed to do?"

"I know it was an emergency, but it was Lex Luthor, you are too naive and you don't know what kind of people those Luthors are."

"I know you don't like his dad, but they are not the same person, besides was I supposed to just let him just die? That's not how you two raised me to be!"

Jonathan sighed and rubbed at his temple, he looked at his wife who gave him an encouraging nod.

"Claire, it's time to tell you the truth."

"What truth?"

"The truth about your parents. Wait here I'm going to get something."

Claire nodded blankly and Jonathan left the kitchen to get who knows what.

Claire looked at her mother, who smiled at her, but Claire could see some sadness and fear in her eyes. Claire got tense and nervous, what could be such a big secret, that it had to be kept from her for 14 years.

Jonathan came back shortly carrying an old trunk and key, he placed the trunk on the table with a thud and used the key to open it.

Inside the trunk Claire saw a blue and red blanket and some kind of crystal with strange symbols etched on it. Claire felt it was a bit anticlimactic and sat back down in relief.

"What's this all about, you made me all nervous and it was just a blanket and some glass artwork."

Jonathan took the blanket and the crystal out of the trunk and placed them in front of his daughter on the table.

"These are the only things we know about your real parents."

Claire took the blanket in her hand and saw a symbol on it that resembled S.

"The only other thing your parents left you with, was the spaceship that crashed with you in it, on Riley's cornfield 12 years ago during the meteor shower. It's in the storm cellar by the way."

Claire looked from Jonathan's serious face, to Martha's half crying face and felt her world spinning.

"You have to be kidding right, I mean this is completely ridiculous right?"

"I know it sounds crazy, but it's all true."

"You are still our child no matter what, we raised and loved you, this doesn't change anything!"

Martha went around the table and hugged her daughter while crying. Claire was feeling like she was outside her body, looking at herself hugging her mother back.

They spent a minute in silence, to let the truth sink in, when Jonathan began speaking again.

"Now do you understand why you have to be so careful, if people like the Luthors ever found out about what you are and what you can do, they would use you in their greed and I won't let that happen."

Claire gently pried herself away from her mothers hug and stood up.

"I have to go think about this alone."

As soon as she finished speaking, there was a gust of wind and a closing of a door and Claire was gone.
