There was no response from Prince Nicien again.
He only sat still in his place without uttering anything and when the Supreme Princess grew impatient, she let out a sigh.
"Nicien," she prodded and the Prince who had been keeping his eyes lowered finally looked at her again.
"It was an allergic reaction, Mother. As she didn't consume much, the royal doctor said that she will be fine soon," Nicien Vamieres explained. "That's why I left. I know that everything will be fine."
"That's strange coming from you who is always cautious at all times," Supreme Princess Selova Vamieres pointed out, rendering her son tight-lipped once again.
"I already told you before, son. I said that even if you can't be a good husband, I won't forgive you if you neglect your wife who came from a faraway place to marry you," the mother reminded in a cold tone. "You even told me not to worry but what is this? It's only a day after your wedding and your actions already have me worried."
Nicien Vamieres recalled the time when he heard those from his mother four days ago. Then he realized how hard it would be for him to listen to his mother this time.
"You grew up witnessing what kind of husband your father was for me," the Supreme Princess spoke up again in a much calmer voice. "You always said that you wanted to be like him and you even promised him that you will be like him once you grow up. I know it's been ten years since he passed away but... do you not consider him as your father anymore?"
All at once, the Prince's eyes grew wide in flusterment!
Did his mother really say that?!
"Mother," he muttered with his thoughts still written all over his face. Then he shook his head. "It's not like that. I never once think that way."
The desperate voice of her son snapped the Supreme Princess out of her tormenting thoughts that made her unable to think clear just a while ago. Then she narrowed her eyes and shut them.
What was she thinking? She shouldn't have said that!
"I'm sorry, Nicien," she muttered once she opened her eyes and lifted them again. "I think I've been feeling too insecure these days. I'm scared too and... I ended up speaking nonsense."
"Mother -"
"If I ask you to choose between your guild and me, what would be your choice?" The Supreme Princess's voice was barely above a whisper but... her words were more than enough to turn the Prince's face pale!
"I... " He couldn't say any more word and the feeling was tormenting.
When Supreme Princess Selova noticed the complicated situation she put her son in, she briefly narrowed her eyes again and forced a smile when she looked up. "Forget about that," she said in a calm voice. "You should go and meet your wife now, son. You already leave her alone for the whole day."
The Prince saw through his mother's fake smile but... he couldn't do anything about it. He would be willing to compromise if this was anything else but it was not. This was the one exception he made in following his mother's words.
He once told her that he was willing to listen to her in everything, except one.
At that time, all Nicien Vamieres could do was watch as his mother rose from her seat and walked out of his chamber.
The Prince sat still in his chamber alone for a good couple of minutes as he was truly feeling the pressure this time. After all, it was never easy for him whenever his mother was concerned.
As the sun slowly set, his chamber became dark along with it. The servants who came inside to light up his chamber snapped Nicien out of his stupor and he realized how late it had become. Losing no time, he abruptly rose from his seat and made his way to his wife's chamber.
* * *
When Nicien Vamieres entered his wife's chamber, the latter was in the middle of drinking a bowl of medicine. Just like the time he left in the morning, the maid was there with her.
"Your Highness," Fina hurriedly stood up and curtsied when she noticed that the one who entered was the Prince.
Prince Nicien's gaze briefly fell on his wife before he looked at the maid. "Are you done?"
He was asking about the medicine and Fina understood that. "Yes, Your Highness."
"Then you may leave us."
Both Princess Rizelle and Fina raised their brows, simultaneously.
He wanted to be with the Princess... alone?
Nevertheless, Fina curtsied once again and hurriedly left the chamber, ignoring the unwillingness she noticed on her Princess's face. Her Princess had said that keeping distance from the Prince must be better but... she thought otherwise.
No matter what, she wanted the best for her Princess.
Her husband was slowly making his way to her and Princess Rizelle was feeling somewhat awkward.
Damn Fina! Must she really leave just to put her in this situation?!
In no time, the Prince was sitting on the chair beside her bed and... all he did was sat there and observed her as if she was some object.
Awkward silence and Prince Nicien? What a great match!
"How are you feeling now?"
She almost blinked when he asked him this, calmly. Maybe she was mistaken but just now, he sounded like he truly cared about her.
This wasn't possible, right?
"I'm sorry for not being thoughtful enough," the Prince said to her when she didn't answer his question. "I should have inquired about all possibilities before the marriage. If I do that, this would be prevented. I apologize."
Rizelle Vamieres was in a daze. The man sitting next to her... only negative rumors surrounded him since years ago.
Cruel, a power-hungry man who even coveted his uncle's throne... were all these true?
Maybe the rumors were just exaggerating. Maybe he wasn't that bad and even if he was, he might have his own reasons. Even before their marriage, he told her that he had his own reason for accepting the alliance marriage and...
In that particular moment, the Princess was filled with the desire to know everything about him; the desire to prove those rumors right or... wrong. And since she was young, she never back down once she set her mind on something.
"Right now, I truly wish to know everything about you, Your Highness," she suddenly muttered; frank like always and she noticed him raising his brows when she asked, "Am I allowed to do that?"
