“Is that… Eleonore?” I heard my brother say from beside me as the two of us walked through the passageway adjacent to the courtyard. I stopped walking just as he said that, having noticed her familiar scent the minute he began speaking as well. “Scratch that, is that Eleonore with the pup who’s been causing us trouble?”


Just as I turned my head in the direction of where Hayden was looking, I saw Eleonore sitting on a bench in the middle of the courtyard. Ruan was standing a fair distance from her as he plucked at some fallen twigs and leaves that were on the floor. I felt strange seeing this, any normal wolf would have sat on the bench next to her, but where he had positioned himself was deliberate. He didn’t want to be seen standing too close to her.


“What the h*ll does he think he’s—” I caught Hayden’s arm as I kept the two of us standing behind one of the larger pillars.
