Brooke would have said more, but Nathan’s hand seemed to turn cold in her grip, and she pulled away. His face was awash in surprise and she wasn’t sure what she had said. “I’m sorry…” she began to apologize but wasn’t certain what she was apologizing for.
“No, I’m sorry,” he said at length. “I just got… lost in thought for a moment. Did you say just exactly how you’re related to Ellis?”
“I don’t know. Our DNA matched us at twenty percent which could be a grandparent or a distant cousin.” She took a deep breath in and let it out, wondering if sharing more of her truth would help him share more of his. “I think my mother may have been in hiding and… I don’t think Ellis was Raymond’s real last name.” She quickly caught him up on what she had found out.
“So, you already knew you might be walking into something dangerous.”
