Chapter 26: Flashes and Feelings

Brooke could sense Nathan’s breath go shallow as he watched the war of decisions play out over her face. When she came to her decision, he was ready.

“I think we should look into that quilt pattern. Talk with your elders and visit the Ellison museum in Virginia. I also want to know what it means to be a familiar.”

He put an arm around her and pulled her close. “Then that’s what we’ll do. Let’s get cleaned up, and then we’ll have some breakfast on the way to see the elders that lived on the island before the attack.”

Brooke didn’t feel her own hunger until mid-morning when she was seated at a restaurant table overlooking the ocean. The day itself was slightly overcast, but the view with its humble simplicity was still breathtaking. All she could see were the beach grass among the sand dunes and the sea. The setting was so serene and perfect that it seemed like a painting.
