Chapter 49: Nevena

“Where did you come from?” asked Ivan, looking at the vukodlak girl with wide eyes.

“Mora decided that now that Volkova couldn’t pay her to continue keeping me, she didn’t have any use of me,” explained Katarina. She looked thinner. I looked at her eyes, trying to see if there was any of the madness left inside of them, but all I could see was my friend’s eyes, sparkling happily at me.

I hugged her and she hugged me back. Ivan looked at both of us, and when we finally broke the embrace, Ivan and Katarina looked at each other awkwardly, and they shook their hands, nodding politely.

“So, you solved it,” said Katarina. She still had some dried ink in her hair.

“You helped a lot,” I said to her. “You solved it first.”

“But Mora drove me insane and I got stuck spinning in loops in my own head and couldn’t stop. She really is a nightmare. No pun intended,” Katarina added as I laughed. She laughed with me, and then she looked at me directly in the eyes.
