Chapter Nineteen: It Takes Two

Lysette could tell that Ember was moderately capable in battle and she knew that Penny was a wild card with her abilities so she would have to be a little careful. And though she wanted to test their abilities, she needed to also restrain herself the best that she could so that Penny did not snap again. Despite all the restrictions, Lysette found herself being confident in the face of this fight.

Penny and Ember took their own positions and tried to coordinate the best strategy against Lysette who took advantage of the distraction and charged towards them both. This attack was very blunt and straightforward which Penny could tell was only being used to separate the two. So instead of dodging the attack, Penny slammed her hand onto the ground, which disturbed the ground right in front of Lysette who circled around it and was now facing Ember who was not prepared for the sudden change. Lysette leaped forward to tackle Ember but was blocked by a stern kick in the ribs from Penny, sending Lysette crashing down to the ground.

" Nice Try. But you will have to rethink your strategy" Penny mocked as Lysette made it back to her feet, impressed that Penny could see through her initial plan.

" Lysette, wiped some of the dirt from her clothes before charging again, this time, keeping her body lower to the ground at an incredibly blinding speed, straight past Ember and directly to Penny. Before Penny could attempt a counter, Lysette circled around behind her student, and prepared to strike her, and would have if Ember had not picked up a rather large stick and yelled for Penny to duck down, which she did. Once Penny was safe, Ember launched the stick forward at an incredible speed, sending it crashing into Lysettes face. This made the wolf back off for a moment, trying to regain her balance.

" REALLY? A STICK? SHIT! " Lysette cried in pain, having not expected such a cheap attack.

"Surviving means doing whatever you have to..and this situation called for a stick" Ember explained as Penny laughed at the situation. Something so basic such as a stick, had managed to hurt Lysette.

" Yeah but..dammit" Lysette cried again as Penny decided to take advantage of the situation and tackled Lysette to the ground, pinning down one of her arms and rearing her fist back, ready to land a finishing blow.

" Not this time kid" Lysette raised up her knee which threw Penny off of her, long enough for her to make it back to her feet. Ember, had taken advantage of the distraction and charged at Lysette from behind, jumping in the air and drop kicking Lysette in the back, sending her right back to the ground.

Penny, quickly placed her hand on the ground and manipulated the ground beneath Lysette, sinking her hands and feet into the earth, trapping the guardian. Though she tried, Lysette could not break herself free from the ground. " Well, looks like we did it " Penny walked over to Lysette and knelt down beside her. " Well, I am not happy with how it was done but..I'm incapacitated...so..I guess I lose " Lysette could not believe that she had lost to the two youngsters but she had to commend their cleverness and teamwork. Never before had they fought alongside one another and yet they managed to take her down with relative ease.

" Can you get me out of here, please?" Lysette pleaded as Penny placed her hand on the ground, which released her hands and feet from captivity. Once she was Free, Lysette was able to return to her feet and glanced back down at where she had been trapped, seeming to be unhappy with the situation. " You beat me. I'm proud of you both. But next time, it won't be so easy. I can promise you that" Lysette claimed as she decided to head and rest for a little while.

Ember turned to after seeing Lysette Head inside. " So is all you two do..charge at one another? " Ember joked.

" Yeah, we haven't really gotten to other forms of combat so far" Penny answered, thinking back on the fight, devising ways that she could improve.

" Well, it feels like charging would probably not always be the best way to go about things. Running at someone seems like it gives way too many openings " Ember expressed which Penny agreed with. " If I had my way, I wouldn't get too close to someone I'm fighting with. I think it would be better to keep my distance, or at least it's what I'm more comfortable with. But Lysette rarely allows for that" Penny explained.

" Yeah but that's because she is basically a wolf. Close combat is probably all she really knows. You have powers so maybe you can figure out a way to use it at a distance effectively without it coming back to bite you in the ass"

Penny had already been thinking of this though for now, her powers were limited on what she could and could not do.

" You can try to launch fireballs or something maybe..or lightning..or like..I don't know..snowballs? " Ember questioned which made Penny laugh. " I don't think snowballs would help that much but I get what you are saying. I guess I could try something like that" Penny raised out her hand and tried to focus on casting a fireball. This was something she deemed would be easy enough to manage. But after several minutes of her arm extended out, nothing was happening. " There has got to be a way to make this happen" Penny tried to focus even harder and still nothing happened. " It was just a suggestion. I mean, I'm not sure what the limits are but also, would you not get burned if you casted fire? " the more Ember thought about the discussion, the more she began to see issues with the idea.

" Its worth the risk.." Penny was trying to keep her focus but was growing more and more discouraged as the minutes passed. There had to be a trick to this task. Everything so far had worked to her advantage in the end, she managed to always get what she wanted with her abilities but fire was being rather stubborn.

" If you are going to insist on this, maybe try focusing on fire itself and not casting it. Volcanos, lighters, matches, I don't know..Peppers? " Ember joked as Penny began thinking on firey things. This, whilst warming up her hands, did nothing in the way of helping cast anything.

" God this sucks" Penny finally relents as she lowers her arms. " Well you didn't get it right now but you can in the future and that's something you can work on for the time being" Ember tried to cheer Penny up and it seemed to work a little, making Penny develop a slight smile. " Come on, let's go inside and get some food and we will figure this out, I promise" Ember assured. " Yeah..thank you " Penny smiled and turned to follow Ember back inside the cabin.
