Chapter 53

beep-beep-beep

"Ah!" Faolán sat up in bed, stunned. He looked around, confused. Was he in the bedroom? Alanna wasn't there.

beep-beep-beep

He looked for the source of that irritating noise. It was his cell phone. He turned off the alarm. In fact, he couldn't even remember why he'd set his cell phone to wake him up on a Sunday morning.

Faolán tossed the sheet aside and felt for the slipper with his feet. He started toward the door, his heart thudding in his chest. What if that hadn't been a dream, but a warning?

He went downstairs and the pack house was absolutely silent. Every step felt like an obstacle. Each step was a noise that echoed inside his head. He reached the bottom of the stairs and took a deep breath. There were no bodies there. He sighed in relief. He walked around the room, and nothing strange. Everything was as usual: clean, no people on the floor, no blood.
