(I just want to say I really appreciate how this book has blown up. I never would've expected to get to 12k views in under a day. I am really thankful for that. Thank you all!)
I wake up in a room with lanterns hanging from the ceiling. I look around and see nothing but wood and a door. 'What the heck is this place?' I think. I don't see anything that implies it's a hospital or something like that. I feel the room moving up and down like I'm on the sea. The door opens and I stand up but fall down as I'm not used to having to balance when the thing I'm standing on is moving up and down.
"Hey kid! You up?" Some gruff man says as he walks in the room.
"Huh? Who are you?" I ask.
"That don't matter, what matters is your up."
"Where am I? And why is the room moving up and down?" I ask.
"You my boy are on the ENOBARIA!" The man says flailing his arms out. "Oh I should've said this earlier. This is your uncle's ship." Then he helps me stand up and lets go once I get used to the movement.
"Why am I not at home? Wait, WHERE"S MY MOTHER!?" I scream and I pound on the man's chest. But I'm on my tipie-toes so I can't hit him well.
"Don't worry kid your mom's fine. In fact she's on the ship with us."
" THEN BRING ME TO HER NOW!" I scream.
"Then let's go." The man says and gestures to the door. I walk out the door and run up the stairs to the outside and see nothing but the blueness of the sea. I stand there with my jaw dropped. The man lightly pushes me forward and snaps me out of my trance.
I look at the mast and see that there are five instead of the normal three. 'Oh my god. The ship is so big that it requires five masts to move it.'
"We also have rowers in order for the ship to get moving from a standstill. Hard work but rewarding you get a muscle from doing that for a while." Says the man seemingly reading my mind. "I forgot to introduce myself my name is Philip. Yours is James, right?" Philip asks.
"Yeah my name's James. Good to meet you." I say, still amazed that they need five masts to keep the ship moving. I see Johan and mommy standing at the quarterdeck looking at the men working on the ship. I wave but I guess they don't see me because they don't wave back or I just can't see them waving.
"There is your mother James." Philip says. I start walking over to the quarterdeck past all of the men working. Whether it be cleaning the deck, cleaning guns, checking for incoming ships, all sorts of things these men are working on doing and they're doing a good job.
"SIR TWO SHIPS COMING IN WESTBOUND!" Someone suddenly screams. "I CAN'T TELL WHAT THEY ARE! CRAP THEY"RE MARINE SHIPS! TWO MARINE SHIPS WESTBOUND!"
"TWO MARINE VESSELS NORTHBOUND!" Someone else yells I can see Johan starting to stir. The quarterdeck door swings open with a loud bang.
"GET ALL CANNONS READY TO FIRE!" Johan yells. Immediately people are scrambling to get to the cannons.
"Ay kid. KID!" Someone says behind me. I turn and a guy about my height is looking at me. "What are you doing? GET THE POWDER!" I flinch as he screams at me. I'm so confused and scared that I just stand there.
"HEY! THAT'S MY NEPHEW!" Johan says from behind me. "AND LAST TIME I CHECKED YOU ARE THE ONE WHO BRINGS POWDER TO THE CANNONS!" The short guy gulps and runs away to get powder. "Don't worry about him." Johan says shaking his head. "He just wants to be in control of something again."
"Wait, again?" I say looking at Johan.
"Once upon a time Zachery William was a second-in-command. He controlled the artillery batteries and navigation. Then he killed a man on our crew. Nobody wanted him dead for treason so we demoted him to the worst thing a man can be on any vessel. A powder carrier." Johan says looking at the marine ships coming in.
All of a sudden people came up from the bottom of the deck and started taking down the sails and putting on regular white sails.
"What are they doing?" I ask.
"Disguising our ship. The hope is the marines come in close and we blow them away with the cannons. At the same time though if they see us we're in trouble because we don't know." Johan said looking desperate.
"Sir all cannons are loaded and ready to fire." Someone says poking his head out of a trapdoor that leads to the hull of the ship.
"Great. DO. NOT. Fire until I make the signal. Understand?" Johan says.
"Yes sir." Then he goes back to the hull. The ships get closer.
"Um. Shouldn't we turn ourselves in? I mean if we don't and someone survives and has a description of the ship or us. We could have a bounty placed on our heads!" I say frantically.
"No one survives our attacks." Johan says darkly. The ships get closer and closer until we can see the men on the marine ship. One of them looks at us but does nothing. Then a small fireball hits him in the face. He screams and starts clawing at his burning face a small piece of charred flesh falls off his face.
All at once cannons from all sides fire at once shaking the ship so much I think it'll break apart. The marine ships blow to pieces. More cannons fire and a cannon ball whizzes past my head. And hits one of the masts.
"JAMES WATCH OUT!" Johan yells. I look up and see splinters falling and the mast starting to fall. I run and feel splinters stabbing into my feet. It feels like thousands of little needles with barbs stabbing into my feet and are being forced in deeper each step I take.
The mast hits the deck and the ship deck cracks and breaks with a loud wailing. I look back and see a 15 foot mast broken through the deck with men scrambling out bloodied and holding various limbs. Whether it be an arm, their side, or hopping out with the help of someone else nearly everyone under the deck was injured.
"WHERE'S THE NEAREST HOSPITAL!?" Johan yells to the quarter deck.
"We just passed it sir." The navigator said.
"GO BACK TO IT!"
"Yes sir." Then I could see the ship starting to turn eastward in the water. Suddenly I fall holding my feet. Blood is seeping out of the wounds in my feet.
"James you're going to be alright." Johan says.
"JAMES! JAMES!" I hear my mom scream as she comes from the quarterdeck. I look up and see her running to me. "James are you okay?" She asks then she sees me holding my feet and the blood that's starting to drip off my fingers. Johan picks me up and takes me to what I would assume is the sick bay.
"What do we have now?" Someone said. I look around and see women and men rushing around in white uniforms with blood on their tunics helping some of the men already in the sick bay.
"Just some big and deep splinters." Johan said.
"Those are either huge or have cut his foot on a major vein. Splinters don't normally bleed that much." Then he looked at my feet. "Yup they cut a couple of veins. They're deep too. I have to remove them. What's your name?" The man asks me.
"My name's James." I say through gritted teeth.
"Hello James! I'm Dax. It's good to meet you!"
"You too." I say. Dax is still looking at my feet when he grabs some tweezers and yanks out a splinter the size of my middle finger. I gasp from the pain and feel more blood starting to flow its warm slow journey to my heel.
"That's one down five more on this foot along with a few mini splinters." Dax says then he does it again and pulls out another splinter that takes a small piece of my foot with it. More blood starts flowing I look at my foot it looks like I got shot it was so bloody. At this point my foot is just numb from all the pain. I see Dax working a splinter my assumption is he's trying to get it to where it'll come out in a straight line.
"Jones get over here!" Dax says. A young man comes over, takes one look at my foot and grabs a pair of tweezers to help Dax. "If you could start on his right foot that would be helpful and be careful." Dax says.
"Yes doctor." Jones says then I feel the tweezers start to pull a splinter that is really deep in my foot. I wince a little. "Sorry buddy this thing, it's in deep." Jones says. It's been about 30 minutes and Jones and Dax are still pulling splinters out of my feet.
"You're almost done James." Dax says.
"I'm done on the right foot." Jones says standing up.
"Great. If you could will you try and get this splinter out it's kind of sideways in the foot."
"Yeah, shouldn't be that hard." Jones says.
"Keyword shouldn't." Dax says. Jones smiles and shakes his head a little then starts digging on the splinter. After another 30 minutes Dax sighs. "Finally that's all of them. Jones you got that other splinter?" Dax asks.
"Nope. This thing doesn't want to even move." Jones says.
"What if you cut it in half or something." I suggest.
"That's actually a really good idea James." Jones says then looks at Dax who just shrugs, stands up, and grabs a pair of small scissors.
"It's going to take a while to cut it's pretty thick." Dax says. After about five minutes he gets it cut. and pulls out the two pieces. "Man those were hard to get out. How are your feet feeling?"
"Um, they feel like nothing." I say Dax smiles a little. "My right foot is starting to get a little more feeling in it." Dax brings over gauze and wraps it tightly around my feet.
"You should be fine but make sure you rest for a little bit okay?" Dax says. I nod and walk out to the deck with a noticeable limp. Men are still running around getting the leaks under control and the injured out of the hull.
My feet hurt like hell. Which mom says sometimes at work when she's talking to her friend. It's taking everything I have to keep rowing at the same pace as the guys. It's hard to do and my shoulders and legs feel like jelly. After 30 minutes Johan says we can stop rowing. I jump up then fall down my legs are so tired. I hear the men laugh and Johan laughs a big laugh that I've never heard before. I smile and laugh a little then I stand up being slow this time I still can hardly stand but I can still do it.
I go to my quarter, collapse on my bed, and pass out.
