Vesta felt relief and fear at the same time.
“Thank you,” she managed.
The council’s holograms faded, leaving Vesta in the dim light of the medical lab. She opened the office door, intent on getting back to her house without being seen.
Vesta left quickly, tiptoeing quietly past the sleeping Condra Phan Re. She swiftly made her way out of the medical building and ran back to her home.
Merlot met her at the door with an indignant meow.
“Oh, hush!” Vesta begged, picking up the fighting furball. She retired to her room, Merlot under her arm.
As she pulled the blankets over her, Merlot curled up near her head. Vesta tried to push all negative thoughts and worries out of her mind. After several minutes of unsuccessful sleep, she sighed and rolled onto her back. Vesta pushed the small brown button, and watched the sky open up above her. Merlot crawled onto her chest and curled into a ball. A soft purr emitted from the black fur.
