Chapter 36: Left of the Middle

Someone shouted the stage was ready. Memphis appeared, clapped me on the shoulder, and shoved a mike in my hand. The look on his face told me he’d heard everything. He might as well have pulled the knife out of his own chest and thrust it into mine.

"Hey, Fredericksburg?" I called into the microphone. "Are you ready?"

The screams echoed backstage. Kade slipped through his hidden entrance and began a simple 4/4 beat. Matteo and Sanctuary’s bassist Jacoby joined in. I mentally ordered Zane onto the stage. The keyboard was a new sound, but one I appreciated. It brought a certain... smoothness to our tune.

Our last song was an old one. Written by Zane and I, it was a single from our first album and had a special place in my heart. We didn’t perform it much anymore, but since the lyrics related to my battle with my brothers, it felt appropriate.

Counting beats, I waited until the proper time, and burst onto the stage. "Have you... ever... been lost?"
