Chapter 49

Citizen Hill

The sun had already gone down, and the streets were dark with scattered lights from tele-screens, drones, and windows from open stores. Citizen stood across the street from Janak's Biometrics Shop and pulled her cloth mask up over her mouth and nose. It would draw attention now, but it would keep the facial recognition cameras searching for just a little longer. She walked into the biometrics shop, making no eye contact. She went straight to the prosthetics shelf and looked into the glass-top counter.

The retail drone buzzed in front of her. "May I help you?" Came out of its speakers. Citizen grabbed the drone with both hands and smashed it down through the glass counter. As the drone dried to re-launch, Citizen reached in and grabbed an exoskeleton knee brace. It wasn't perfect but it will help for now. She was out the door with the brace in hand before the drone was back in the air. The alarm was going off, but she stepped onto her cycle pod and took off.
