I was told that he was the best self-defense I needed to protect myself.

I was vulnerable.

Weak.

My sister showed me that I was better than that and I had one mission to keep safe.

I was an independent woman, fighting to survive.

That’s what I told myself until I met my instructor.

His tattoos and dark eyes should have kept me away.

But, I found myself falling, so deep that it led me out of the shadows and into the burning flames.

For the fourth time, Tommy glanced at his watch. Where is Ruby? Earlier, he spotted her purse on the seat even though the busboy had cleared their table already. 


His heart hammered in his chest, but he pushed aside the panic to think clearly. Doubling back inside the restaurant, he hoped she'd be there waiting for him and he just missed her. But their table was empty. 


What was taking so long? He flagged down his server. "Excuse me, can you ask if Ruby is in the ladies' room?" 


The woman looked at him as if he'd grown a sign that said Pervert on his forehead.  


"Sorry, it's just I've been waiting a while and we have movie tickets." He smiled even though he wanted to bust down the door and shout Ruby's name. "I'm just worried, that's all." 


Tommy couldn't stop watching the door. The woman disappeared inside, then a moment later came out. "Sorry sir, but looks like your date might have ditched you."
