I was told that he was the best self-defense I needed to protect myself.

I was vulnerable.

Weak.

My sister showed me that I was better than that and I had one mission to keep safe.

I was an independent woman, fighting to survive.

That’s what I told myself until I met my instructor.

His tattoos and dark eyes should have kept me away.

But, I found myself falling, so deep that it led me out of the shadows and into the burning flames.

He was a demon.

As Tommy dove for the gunman, he shoved the man's hand and the gun down until the barrel was between them, pointing to the ground.  


The bullet detonated and pierced Tommy's thigh like a mallet. He stumbled back a step. Shit! His hand throbbed and now his leg felt like the bullet hit his bone. Still, he knew better than to take his hands off the guy and his weapon. Shaking his head, he tried to refocus. Remove the weapon any way possible without getting shot again or dying. He ignored the pulsating pain radiating through his thigh. If he didn't disarm this man, he'd go after Ruby. 


The gunman sneered and kicked Tommy in the leg. 


Instead of cringing, Tommy forced his pain into a grin. "That all you got?"  


Tommy pressed the weapon against the guy's thumb, breaking the enemy's hold on the gun. 


Instantly, the man held up his hands and stepped backward. "Hey Man, we don't want no trouble."
