Chapter 30

Tommy

Tommy gritted his teeth and yanked out the blade. He hissed out a breath when the burn suggested he'd stripped a chunk of flesh from his left oblique. He pressed his hand to his wound, blood soaking his shirt. Even without the blade, each movement still tore at something deep inside him.

Past the edge of the swamp, Brady carried Ruby away, cradled in his arms. The moon and stars barely showed the croc that glided along the water.

He had to save her, but his flank cramped up, sending twinges down his thigh. His fingers covered with blood, and his grip slipped as he clutched the handle of the pistol. He pushed himself to his feet, but his knees protested and wobbled beneath him. Using a tree to lean against, he stayed erect and glanced up. Brady was too far away and Tommy might accidently shoot Ruby if he followed too closely. He'd keep his distance, but couldn't lose them.
