Chapter Five

It has now been a full year since I have been with Maverick's family. I know a lot about them all especial Maverick. He is very sweet, caring, kind, funny, and so much more. I got ready and walked into the kitchen to see everyone already sitting at the table eating.

"Sorry about being late for breakfast, if I knew you all were ready to eat I would have got up earlier."

"Don't worry about it Emma, we just didn't want to wake you up from your sleep." "You looked so tired last night."

"Why?" "I wouldn't mind if you woke me up."

"Emma what mother is trying to say is that everyone's sleep is so important that is why we let you sleep in." "You also have had lots of nightmares lately so it was nice to see you able to sleep."

"Oh." "I will be right back."

I really wish they wouldn't talk about all the nightmares I have had. How did they know anyway? Right I screamed awake and I knew it woke up the whole house. I am trying so hard to not scream when I wake up from the nightmares but it's so hard to. I wish I knew what to do to stop the nightmares from happening.

"Emma are you alright you have been in your room for a while now?"

I walked over to her.

I gave him a big hug and everything seemed to fade away. All the nightmares and everything that I was just thinking of vanished.

"I am fine, I just needed a moment to myself that's all."

"I brought you breakfast."

"Thank you."

He handed me the plate.

I wrapped her in my embrace.

"You are strong and I wish I could be as strong as you are." "I mean I am strong in different ways but I wish I was just like you mentally strong." "I mean I am but not like you."

"I understand what you are trying to say but I promise you that you don't want to be like me in any way." "Would you like to go out and do something today?"

I watched as she adjusted her shirt and we locked eyes. I love her deep blue eyes so much I could just lose myself in them anytime.

"Yes, we should do something fun together today." "It will be a lot of fun and I know the perfect place."

I know Emma so well now I could read her like a book now that I know her so well. I took Emma's hands and we walked into the kitchen.

"Mother Emma and I are going to hangout today." "We will be back before dark."

Alright you two have fun and I will see you before sun down."

"Yes mother." "Love you."

I kissed and hugged my mother. I held Emma's hand as we went to the door.

"I am going to take you somewhere special."

"Are you going to tell me where we are going?"

He didn't say anything as we walked until we came to the wall that cuts off both lands.

"What are we doing here?"

"This is where we first met, remember?"

"Yes I do but you do know that it is very dangerous to be here." "So what are we doing here?"

I walked up to the wall.

"Don't worry I do this all the time I come and go between both lands."

I walked behind her.

"Really?"

I read what the wall said and to my surprise this wasn't my side of the wall at all I am supposed to be on the other side. That also means he's not from my side at all.

"Umm."

"What's wrong Emma?"

"Maverick, we can't see each other anymore."

I started to climb the wall.

"Hey wait." "Why can't we see each other anymore?"

"Can't you see I am from this side of the wall and you are from that side." "I can't believe I didn't notice this before all the different places and people." "How could I be so stupid to cross the wall?" "Wait, how did I cross the wall?"

"What!?" "You're from that side of the wall?" "No wonder why I never saw you before." "I thought the reason why you were on that side of the wall was because you are just like me always sneaking around for the fun of it." "My great grandfather told me that his best friend is the one who started this war in the first place."

What? So my great grandfather was best friends with Maverick's great grandfather? What Maverick just said broke my heart. My great grandfather is the sweetest and kindest person I know and yet he's saying that my great grandfather is the cause of this war? Tears filled my eyes and fell down my face without hesitation.

"What are you crying?" "Your great grandfather was my great grandfather's best friend?"

"Yes he was but he wasn't a bad man."

"I should kill you." "That's what my great grandfather told me was to kill everyone that is related to him and you are one of them." "But since it wouldn't be right for me to kill you when you are unarmed I will let you free for now but you better watch your back from now on."

I started to walk away.

"Oh and Emma you are right it's best if we never see each other again."

I can't believe she is the enemy this whole time. I looked at her face and it had so much in her eyes. I hate to see her hurt but she is the enemy and I need to protect my family and people.

"Slam!!"

"Hello son."

I looked to see that Emma is not with him.

"Maverick, what's wrong?" "Where is Emma?"

"I…I took her back to the wall that is the first place we met and she noticed that she is from the other side of the wall so she went back to her side and didn't come back with me."

"What?" "Why?"

"Because I told her that I should kill her right there and now because her great grandfather was my great grandfather's best friend and that is what great grandfather wanted us to do was to kill that family but I let her go free since she wasn't armed at all."

I held my son's shoulders.

"I know that's what he would have wanted but he's gone now and it's time to try and change things so that this war can end." "I know Emma was from the other side but I wanted to get to know her better so I could understand what life is like on the other side of the wall." "I know that I wanted to do the same thing that grandfather would have wanted but instead I opened my heart and mind to a new way of what we can become." "I am sorry I didn't tell both of you I just didn't have the heart to break you both apart."

"But you didn't."

"That's enough!" "I want you to think long and hard about Emma, what you said, and about the time you spent with her then tell me if you still have the heart to kill her."

Without another word my mother walked away.

****

I can't believe he said all of that to me. I sat down tears still rolling down my face. I loved him so much and this is what I get. When I finally stopped crying it was getting dark out. I got up and traced my hands on the wall as I walked down a path. I walked for about ten minutes when my hand hit something and it fell to the ground. I picked it up. I am not sure what it is because it's so dark out but it looks like a book.

"Sigh."

I will read it later when the light comes back and when I am not so tired. I should find a place to sleep. There is no way I can find my way back in the dark.

****

I can't believe my mother.

"Sigh."

She might be right. I sat and thought about everything that my mother had said. I can't believe my mother is right. But I still don't know if I will ever see Emma again because I still want to do as my great grandfather would have wanted. My eyes started to get heavy as I fell asleep.
