Chapter 11

Three days later, my birthday arrives and, as I do with every birthday, I tell myself 'happy birthday' and move on with my day. If I’m lucky, I’ll be able to stop by the bakery to get a cupcake to eat alone in my room. It’s not something to feel happy about but I do. It’s not much or big, but I worked with it for years. I numbed the stinging pain every time I remember that I have no one to celebrate with, besides Madison, but my family never had me available to celebrate with her. She does tell me happy birthday, like today, but for once, I just want to celebrate with someone.

Someone like Joshua.

But so far, he hasn’t told me happy birthday.

Does he even remember that it’s my birthday?

I fix my blazer and press my lips together. I doubt he does. He didn’t say anything to me at breakfast.

With one final sigh of disappointment, I walk out of my room to head to the office building to assist the department manager.
