Last Chance

It was the last chance for this young man. Although he had all these years to get them out, he had suppressed the feelings 'for a better day'. But that changed after the news broadcast. if there was not going to be a day, then it was the best day today.

After he confirmed the news was true and he was indeed going to die, he dialed a phone number that he remembered by heart. The phone was picked up immediately, "hello?" the voice on the other side said.

Taking a deep breath, he replied, "Hello love. it's me."

"Who? are you sure this is the right number, sir?"

"Yes, I am sure." the man paused for a minute there, "Is the dog still okay? I remember you said that you'd take care of him."

"Wait a minute," the boy on the other side stepped away, but was still audible, "mom, there is a crazy man on the phone asking about Fluffy."

The man chuckled a bit at the name Fluffy. it was the name given to the dog by his son, right around the time he started to talk. this was probably his first time hearing his son talk in years. He knew he didn't deserve to talk to his son after what he had done, but it was now or never for him.

"Peter?" a woman's voice came from the other side.

"Yes." Peter sighed, "I am sorry for calling you. But I needed to talk to our son."

"You're no father of his, you don't deserve to be." the woman said angrily. "When did they let you out of prison?"

"About 2 years ago. Took some time to get back on my legs."

"Then why didn't you call before today?" the woman sounded like she was worried.

"I didn't have the right." Peter replied, "and once I heard from mom that you have been raising him alone, I didn't have the courage to confront you."

"So why now?" the woman started sobbing, "is it because you can't run away anymore? is that it?"

Peter took a deep breath, that woman was right, and he knew it. "Yes. I wanted to hear his voice before I finally go."

"I am not letting you talk to him again." she replied, "You're a coward, and always will be."

Then the call ended. After sitting in silence for some time, Peter laughed at this ironic situation, then started crying. It was the last day of his life, and yet he wasn't able to redeem himself.

He went out on the balcony and looked at the sun setting in the distance. After confirming the time left on his phone, placed the phone down and sat on the walls of the balcony.

The phone screen showed the time left. [06:36:32]

Just as the sun set, peter decided that he was going to choose how his life ends, and he jumped down from the balcony.
