Picnic at the park

This news broadcast was not bad news for everyone. For this father, it was a perfect chance for revenge. the judiciary had failed him two years ago, and it has been eating him ever since. 'The last day' was very tempting to him. he took out the gun he had kept secret for three years. it was collecting dust until now but could still do the job for what it was bought for.

"David, are you going for a walk?" his wife shouted from the kitchen, "if you are, get some bread and milk. we're out of milk."

"Got it, do you want to get some cheese as well?" David asked as he hid the gun under his jacket. the pistol sat there comfortably as if it was itself waiting for this day. He had made sure to not let his wife notice this. After getting a list of things to buy from his wife, he went outside.

After the announcement yesterday, the view of his small town was changed. There were people talking and enjoying the moment, rather than just minding their own business. 'Disgusting, all of them.' David thought to himself. 'Now that it was their turn to die, they were making most of it. what happened to all these feelings when it was someone else on the last day of their life?' he knew that it wasn't the fault of those people, but it still irritated him. Soon, he came to the end of his walk. there was the door to the house of that bastard.

David rang the bell once, then twice. There was some sound from inside, someone was grumbling that he had to open the door for someone this early. David recognized the voice, he hated this voice more than anything in this world. His blood started to boil, his face was heating up from anger. He kept his temper under control and waited for him to open the door.

"Whatcha want old man?" a young man was at the door, still not sober.

"You got a stash?" David asked. "I want to try some stuff up before I go, you know."

"kekekeke, is that so?" the boy opened the door, "come on in, tell me what you like to try. I need to dig it out."

"Just something an old man like me can take easily, you got stuff like that?" David asked as he sat down at the pungent sofa. There was a stinking smell of alcohol and smoke around the room. It was infuriating, David had to keep all the rage inside of him. The boy came with a few slips of paper and a packet of something that seemed green dry leaves. "Do you know how to roll one? Probably not... let me do it for ya." he said and left the room again.

David couldn't hold it any longer, he reached for the gun and carefully removed the safety lock. Although his heart had been beating pretty hard since he entered this room, he was completely calm in that moment. As soon as the boy entered the room again, his brain was blown to bits.

One bullet, that's all it took for him to get rid of that itch. He felt relaxed as he got out of the house, making sure to not have any stains on his clothes. He closed the door and left, as if he was at his friend's house. He went to nearby dumpster and threw his gun there, making sure that no one saw him. He then went to the supermarket, which was still open with huge discounts on everything. He bought a small packet of bread, one liter of milk, and small block of cheese. The cashier was a young boy who looked to be in his late teens. The boy welcomed the man with a smile and began billing the items. David sweetly asked, "what are you doing here on the last day? Shouldn't you have some fun?"

"Oh, don't worry sir." the boy looked at the timer on the screens that usually had advertisements, "We still have five hours, i am going on a trip to the lake with my parents after my shift ends." he said and put the items in the bag. "Have a nice day."

"You too." David said and left the store. he had a smile of accomplishment on his face. that boy reminded of his son. Few years back, he was working at the same store and had a good future ahead. He was not the brightest or the best in his school, but he was a son David was proud of. Five years ago, he was taken from him. An argument with non applicable discount resulted in a gunshot that killed his son. The one who shot his son was still underage and got out free, even after the two long years of fighting.

The two years that were full of suffering and stress, ended up bearing no fruit. This broke david from inside, he was not able to get justice for his son, and this was source of both his guilt and anger. But all that was over now, he had done what the law failed to do, and he was finally free. With the groceries in hand, he entered his home, "I am home. you're not gonna believe how cheap i got these for."

"Welcome back." his wife looked like she was bust making something, "Give me the milk, i am making pie. You go and make some sandwiches for the park." she ordered. They had a picnic planned today, to celebrate their last moments here. David carefully made the sandwiches that they were going to have. The house was filling up with the sweet aroma of the pie. He prepared the food basket and packed the outdoor mats while the pie cooled down.

They went to the park so they could enjoy the sunset there. He was truly happy and content for first time in five years, and it was the way he would die, what more he could ask for?

As the old couple sat in the part, the screen on the supermarket was still displaying the time left till impact.
