Chapter 48: Promise Me

We continued the long stroll through the forest and eventually stopped by a giant leafless tree. Fall was here. The leaves had shed and now decorated the ground with beautiful fall colors.

He sighed deeply and ruffled his hair. He leaned against the tree and slumped to the floor. "I know the tree looks dead, and sad, but I promise you when spring comes, it'll blossom beautifully." He looked at me and patted the spot next to him. "Sit."

I flopped down right next to him.

"Can I trust you to stay out of trouble for a while?" He locked his gaze on the floor.

"Pfft…What are you talking about? I never get in trouble."

He let out a loud breath and glared at me.

"Why are you asking that anyways? It's not like I go looking for trouble. It just finds me." I shrugged and avoided his gaze.

"Uh huh." He didn't believe a word I said. "I have to go somewhere, so I won't be here to look out for you."
