Zhang Wuji searched through his memories and eventually came up with three soul-forging techniques he could cultivate.
The Soul Devouring Scripture was the most overbearing, the Empyrean Soul Art was the most passive, and lastly, the Great Emptiness Sutra was the most mysterious.
The Soul Devouring Scripture involved the most violent use of spatial laws, which transformed the soul into that of the heavens to become immortal. On the other hand, the Empyrean Soul Art relied on the passive usage of temporal laws to achieve the same end result.
In contrast, the Great Emptiness Sutra followed an entirely different concept.
If the Soul Devouring Scripture and Empyrean Soul Art worshipped the heavens as the ultimate destination of immortality, then the Great Emptiness Sutra worshipped the everlasting nothingness that predated the formation of the heavens. It pursued the power that gave birth to the heavens.
Although the Great Emptiness Sutra had a higher aspiration, it was also the most difficult to cultivate.
Despite that, Zhang Wuji still found it to be the most suitable cultivation technique to use in his current situation.
After all, the Soul Devouring Scripture was too domineering and damaging to the soul. Without a plethora of soul medicines to repair the micro injuries left behind by the technique, Zhang Wuji would be training his mind into a vegetative state.
On the other hand, while the Empyrean Soul Art was the safest technique to cultivate, it took too long. His body would decay into bone dust before he could achieve any significant progress in soul forging.
Although the Great Emptiness Sutra also possessed its uncertainties, it didn't hurt to try it first. If it didn't work out, it wouldn't be too late to consider the other two soul-forging techniques.
In truth, the Great Emptiness Sutra was quite simple. However, its difficulty was also hidden within this simplicity.
'According to the concept of the Great Emptiness Sutra, the human bodies are simply our avatars. Our souls originate from a world of nothingness before the existence of the universe. Until the universe ceases to exist, it is also a cage preventing our souls from returning to our original world,' Zhang Wuji recalled.
The main practice of the Great Emptiness Sutra was a visualization technique.
Zhang Wuji simply had to close his eyes and imagine the great nothingness, which took absolutely no effort. Anyone who closed their eyes would see the darkness of nothingness.
Some would say this darkness with vague particles of light was their conscious awareness of the universe. However, according to the Great Emptiness Sutra, this is incorrect.
The Great Emptiness Sutra explained that it was the realm beyond the edge of the universe. In other words, it was the domain of the unobservable universe, the great nothingness that had always been around before the birth of the universe.
Since the original soul came from nothing, one's consciousness would start in this world of darkness. Stars sighted in this realm of nothingness were simply phantom lights created by one's imagination.
The key to cultivating the Great Emptiness Sutra was imagining oneself in this world of nothingness, finding the way back to the observable universe.
The human mind has great power, yet due to the disconnection between body and soul, little of it can be realized beyond the mental realm.
Only by bridging the connection between the great nothingness and the observable universe within one's mind can a person's soul draw power from the great nothingness and manifest it in the real world.
Within Zhang Wuji's world of great nothingness, he blindly searched for the way back to the observable universe. Since there was no light to determine his direction, he could rely on luck.
Zzzz…
Before Zhang Wuji realized it, he slept like a log until the next morning.
Moreover, when he woke up the next morning, he nearly forgot what he was doing the previous night. Such was the difficulty of the Great Emptiness Sutra.
Everyone who had ever tried to cultivate the Great Emptiness Sutra would fall into a deep sleep and semi-forget their objective the following morning. Maintaining focus was a challenge in and of itself, and the severity of forgetfulness would increase according to the duration of persistence.
Although Heavenly City's history did not record anyone successfully cultivating the Great Emptiness Sutra, this also did not stop everyone from learning it.
After all, it was a great technique for entering deep sleep. Even insomniacs would fall asleep under its mysterious spell.
"So, I ended up falling asleep, huh?" Zhang Wuji wryly smiled without a hint of disappointment.
It was expected that he would fail to cultivate the Great Emptiness Sutra. However, he was able to verify its effect.
It was great news that the hidden laws of the Great Emptiness Sutra still worked in this desolate modern world. After all, it proved that cultivation was still possible despite its terrible conditions.
"Oh, you are already awake? How are you feeling, Little Zhang? I can call you that, right?" An elderly man in a white coat asked after entering the high-end ward to check up on the patient.
Zhang Wuji glanced at the elderly man's name tag and was taken aback.
"You are my elder, Doctor Peng, so you can call me however you like. I am feeling fine right now. Thank you for your concern," Zhang Wuji replied cordially with a doubtful look.
Doctor Peng quickly noticed his strange gaze as he performed his checkup.
"What's the matter, Little Zhang? Why are you looking at this old man like that? Is there something on my face?"
"Not at all, Doctor Peng. I'm just overwhelmed by the honor. I didn't expect to be attended by the head of trauma personally. A normal nurse would have sufficed for the job, no?"
"Hohoho, indeed, that is the case. However, President Wu asked me to take good care of you, so how can this old man not attend personally? This… is amazing!" Doctor Peng suddenly exclaimed with a look of astonishment.
The terribly big bruise on Zhang Wuji's back had already shrunk by a small margin.
"What's the matter, Doctor Peng?"
"It seems you won't need two weeks to recover fully. A few days will do. This rate of recovery is impressive, even for a healthy body."
"Oh?"
Zhang Wuji looked startled.
Although he felt refreshed from the deep sleep, he didn't expect his injury to heal so quickly.
It was said that the human body healed faster during deep sleep, but the effect shouldn't make this much of a difference.
Was this a benefit of cultivating the Great Emptiness Sutra?
Zhang Wuji thought he had failed to make progress since he fell asleep, but perhaps that was not the case. Maybe the essence of the Great Emptiness Sutra required sleeping?
Maybe some changes could only take place in the body when it was put into deep sleep.
"Do you have any idea why your body is recovering so quickly, Little Zhang?"
"I'm not exactly sure. I did sleep like a log last night and felt especially refreshed this morning, Doctor Peng."
Doctor Peng immediately glanced at Zhang Wuji weirdly.
"You can sleep well, even with such a big, painful bruise? This… if you need any help, feel free to call this old man in the future, Little Zhang."
Doctor Peng suddenly handed him a piece of paper with his phone number, looking sad and sympathetic.
He thought Zhang Wuji might be a survivor of physical abuse. Normal people wouldn't be able to tolerate such pain otherwise.
Furthermore, it would also explain his sturdy body and quick recovery to some degree.
Although Zhang Wuji was taken aback by Doctor Peng's unnatural friendliness, he didn't refuse his good intentions.
"Thank you, Doctor Peng," Zhang Wuji accepted the phone number.
