The Excruciating Pain

The pitiful stares ceased with time. They have begun to think of me as a pathetic weakling.

I snickered darkly gazing outside of my bedroom window; people enjoying themselves, giving life to the night, ah happiness.

I had cried in solitude enough to go numb, I didn't need to cry in front of the entire world. My parents had been mourned and I was finally ready to move on. But if they didn't receive a show, you were made out to be a fool- I learned in the past couple months.

It was a full moon night, my first shift. I had accepted the accompanying pain of my parent's absence along with that of the shift.

The little reminders were the worst, the deep dark voice from within you pointing out what all could've been.

At least I had my brother, I was grateful for that.

Mikaela Adalia Carter was an orphan now from being the daughter of the former alpha of Nocte Creaturae. Had she kept her anger in check and not murdered a human, perhaps she could have a chance at a normal life, but as fate would have it, that was further from the reality.

Footsteps became clearer and shortly entered Jack, holding a bottle of bourbon from its neck.

I didn't move from my position, he wordlessly sat across from me on the windowsill. He made himself comfortable with his right leg dangling outside of our two story house.

Upon taking a swig, he asked, "Ready for the excruciating pain?" Accompanied with maniacal grin.

"Can't wait." I remarked dryly snatching the bottle from his hand. Before I could bring it to my lips he snatched it back. "Hey!" I protested.

"You are not legally allowed to drink." He said holding the glass container to his chest.

"Those things apply to me?" I deadpanned. He rolled his eyes and tipped the bottle in my direction. I gulped a large amount, my throat burning from the addictive liquid.

After dad passed, Jack being the elder sibling and only son, naturally took the responsibilities of the alpha. Some of our pack still lives in the woods, and Jack provides them with food and such.

His phone buzzed, I couldn't read whose name it was but it had to be pretty important for he dashed out of the room without saying a word.

Strange.

I could follow him, but thought better of it. If he wanted to inform me he would have.

With that thought I slipped under the comforter leaving the window open for air, resting before the shift.

My eyes shot open when I heard pounding at my door, throwing off the covers, I opened it in a rush to. On the other side stood the boy I grew up with, son of our beta, but given the few members, these titles barely mean anything. There is only one in power, the alpha.

"Mom-dad, Jack" He was breathing heavily.

"They-he-"

"Calm down and speak properly, Max." I told him.

"They have him Mikky," He stressed, his brown eyes frantic.

I felt myself growing concerned. "How are you here?"

"I- I came for backup sensing danger." He explained, his whole form was shaking, shaking from fear.

"It's gonna be alright, okay?" I assured him as I heard guard wolves running out.

"You don't understand, Mikky, Alpha was ambushed along with mom and dad-" He looked near tears, but I knew he wasn't. But his fear spoke volume of the gravity of the situation. "-and we need to go."

I grabbed his hand in mine and began to drag him out myself when he remained unmoving.

"Come on, Max."
