He staggered back and I took the opportunity to bolt out of the room.
Run
I mind-linked the single word to Max and in no time he was running beside me.
From the corner of my eye I caught the sight of his face, worry etched on it.
I racked my brain and realised that he was worried about Sheila. It's not like we weren't going to save her, but we should at least be able to save her.
I hope to God they don't do anything to Sheila.
We stopped a mile later, having crossed an entire populated area to reach another abandoned. We stood under a shade at the entrance of a small grocery store.
"What now?" He asked, his brown eyes defeated.
"Well we escaped, how- I mean you said that the place was an illusion." I wondered aloud. "There was nothing to prevent our escape, which means there is nothing stopping us from going back in." I apprehended.
My beta and I fell into silence promptly at the sight of a man. Sunglasses perched on his sharp nose, blocking the view of his eyes, he pushed through the door of Joe's Grocery Store.
Max and I exchanged a look before entering the store ourselves.
After grabbing a few things that I needed, I shuffled to the cashier. I finally got ahold of the cash after searching my pockets quite embarrassingly for minutes. I slid it towards the cashier and waited for him to return me the change.
At the same time, an arm snaked around me -careful not to touch me- with the intent of purchase as he unfurled his fist revealing a bill.
My eyes travelled up the inked sleeve, revealing the sunglass man I saw earlier. The black sunglasses still sat on his nose hiding his eyes when he flashed me a friendly smile. I stared at him blankly in return.
"Is there something in his teeth?" Max inquired while eyeing him suspiciously.
That instantly made the smile drop off his face, effectively curtaining his pearly whites. He unwrapped the gum he had bought earlier and popped it in his mouth before asking genuinely, "Is there something though?"
I smiled in amusement and shook my head at the question and returned to the cashier. As Max picked up the bags filled with packets of chips I stuffed my hands in the pockets of my jeans to keep the change.
The tattooed guy had furrowed his eyebrows when I turned back around, and looked at me quizzically. "Mikaela" I introduced with a tight lipped smile.
His eyebrows parted and his mouth formed an 'o' before he introduced himself, "Brooke Taylor."
A look of uncertainty all of a sudden dawned his features. He inhaled sharply and gulped before hesitantly stretching out his arm. His inked arm waited for me in the air. I looked at his arm, momentarily my eyes flitting to his face before putting my hand in his.
"Are you s-s-scared?" Max mocked slapping his hand on Brooke's shoulder. Brooke flinched and pulled his hand away, shifting away from from us. "We know you are a wolf. Drop the act." Max hissed as I eyed Brooke with caution.
He raked his hand through his hair and then slid off his glasses revealing panicked hazel orbs. My hand went forward on its own record which he refused with a vigorous shake of his head and moved further away from Max and I. He turned on his heels and exited the store wordlessly.
I walked after him only to be throat punched as soon as I stepped out the store.
My head fell back from the impact and I stumbled to gain balance.
Can't I get a break?
"Dude I just bought those!" Max yelled as our food fell from his hand because of the attackers.
I threw my fist in my attacker's face. Blood pounded in my ears as my hand collided with the familiar burly man's nose.
He held his nose in agony and grunted.
I took the moment to study the scene in front of me, Max held his attacker by the collar while his other hand tore the flesh of his attacker's chest finding the burly man's heart.
I watched as, in a swift movement, a black shirted man pushed Max away and pinned him against the wall of the convenience store.
The burly man's wounds healed naturally while I focused on his savior, who was holding Max by his throat. My eyes widened in alarm as I viewed his strong hold on Max. Creed's smoky eyes were set in a harsh glare as he continued to choke Max.
The healed burly man came from behind me, taking hold of my wrists. A low whimper emerged from my throat catching Creed's attention. His head snapped in my direction and eyes bored into mine. A storm brewed in his silver orbs as they glared at my wrists and then at the man holding me hostage. A vicious growl erupted from him and the man's hands instantly released me.
"Edan," I whispered the single word.
My pleading tone made him turn to me, those ashy orbs appeared merciless and probably were, but I hoped to god that just this once, he would go against his very nature.
I blinked slowly so as to keep the tears back. I couldn't bear the thought of loosing Max too.
He kept staring at me making my stomach jumble into knots. With a frown marred on his face, he observed me, raking my face with his heated gaze. My lip quivered under the weight of my helpless state.
If I tried anything right now, and it failed, even the slightest hope of Max's life being spared would extinguish. And that was a risk I wasn't willing to take.
His cold stare unfaltering he threw a scowl at me before injecting a large amount of wolfsbane in Max's body. He stepped back as Max's unconscious body kissed the ground. I closed my eyes letting a few stray tears of relief flow down my face. My silent pleas were answered. I instantly wiped them with the back of my hand.
Tucking my hair behind my ear I turned towards Edan and his bitches. "You are so evil," I sneered, venom dripping from my words as I swore to make him just as miserable as he did me.
He twisted his head enough for me catch a glimpse of the devilish smirk adorning his face, his back still facing me. "Well that is what I was going for, Ada" He remarked in satire, the nickname rolling off his tongue effortlessly.
Taken aback by the use of my middle name, Adalia, I chose to let out a small gasp, ignoring the stupid fluttering sensation in my stomach.
Seriously, how pathetic could I be? How could I not have control over my own body? How could I allow myself to feel that way about someone like him.
You don't have that power over your heart, Amara came forward as the voice of reason.
Well I'd sure as hell like that, I mumble like a petulant child.
What? I didn't quite get that, you see I am not fluent in idiot. She said, stopping from being comforting and going back to being, well, her. I knew it was fleeting moment.
Really? Because I swear I picked up on it ever since I started talking to you.
Aw look at that, you do have a tongue. And suprisingly a brain. Tell me honestly, this was your test run wasn't it?
I'm at least interesting enough to suprise you. You, on the other hand, don't offer anything new, I already knew you were a bitch.
Well, this bitch just stopped you from wallowing in self pity and get your head straight, so you're welcome.
Thanks, Amara
