"Do you know that black and white framed picture of me that's on my desk?"
"The one with you in your fancy toque blanche?"
"Oh my," Elizabeth smiled at her daughter, "excellent French pronunciation!"
"Thank you!" Olivia sat up straight at the compliment.
"Yes, the photo of me in my fancy white chef's hat — that was taken by your father."
"The President?"
"Yes, Olivia, your father, the President of the United States."
"Where was it taken?"
"In the kitchen of Le Terra, in Alexandria, when I was the sous chef there."
"Wow."
"It's where we met. Your father was a young, handsome, first-term congressman from Illinois who came into the restaurant a lot."
"Oh my God, mom, that's so romantic!"
"Yeah, it was - - at first."
"What happened?"
"The way Ollie talked to me, he -"
"He made you melt."
Her mom looked down. "Yeah, you could say that."
Taking a deep breath, she continued.
"Before I knew it, I had fallen hard for him and found out I was pregnant."
"God, mom. With me."
"No. You came later. I was pregnant with your sister, Sofia."
Olivia stared at her mother, mouth open in disbelief. Again, Elizabeth looked down.
"I could never bring myself to tell you."
"Mom - -"
"I know. I'm an awful person."
"No, mom, you're not. I just, I mean, I can't believe I have -"
"A sister?"
"Yes! Where is she? Where is Sofia? I want to meet her!"
"You can't. Ever."
"What? Why not? What do you mean?"
Elizabeth pulled a deep breath into her lungs and took Olivia's hands in hers.
"When Ollie found out I was pregnant, he threw a fit, screaming at me, asking me I how I could be so stupid!"
Tears welled up and streamed down Elizabeth's face as Olivia pulled her mother into her arms in a deep hug.
"He told me I had to 'get rid of it' - - like she was a thing to be thrown away." Elizabeth was choking on her words, sobbing.
"Mom, I'm so sorry."
"That was when he told me this would ruin his career if his wife found out."
"Wait. What? Oh my God, mom! He was married then?"
"Yes. I'd kind of suspected, but I was in love with him and I didn't want to believe anything bad about him."
"What did you do?"
"I refused to do what he wanted. I told him this was his responsibility too and that if he wanted to save his marriage and his career, he needed to take care of me and the baby."
"Mom," Olivia squeezed her mother's hands, "you were so brave!"
Elizabeth smiled and looked into Olivia's eyes with love and appreciation.
"What happened to Sofia?"
"Ollie kept his word. But, he got more than he bargained for."
"What do you mean?"
"Your sister has Downs syndrome. Ollie insisted she be put in a group home where she could be better cared for and -"
Elizabeth sighed and looked down.
"He wanted to keep me around, but not her."
"My father is a goddam shit."
Elizabeth just sighed.
"She was a reminder of his affair with me and he couldn't stand that."
After a long silence, Olivia asked, "Where is she?"
"Saint Thaddeus. Up in in Northeastern Pennsylvania. It's a sort of group home for the developmentally disabled."
"But, Downs kids - I mean, their not disabled, they're -"
"Olivia, I know. But Ollie wouldn't allow anything else."
"Jesus, mom."
The two stopped talking as Olivia's mind raced, trying to comprehend all of her mother's revrlations.
Olivia looked up, staring intently into her mom's eyes.
"And, so after all that, you kept fucking him?"
Elizabeth looked at the ceiling.
"God, Olivia."
"Well?"
Elizabeth was still looking at the ceiling, as if looking for answers.
"Mom. What happened? How could keep sleeping with a man like that?"
