Chapter 10: Downtime

The walk to the deli gave Nico plenty of time to puzzle over Rebecca’s strange behavior. He knew that as a temp she didn’t get paid what a permanent employee would, but he’d ensured that even temps were paid a fair, even generous, hourly rate.

Why was she eating ramen for lunch? Surely she could afford better.

Come to think of it, her wardrobe seemed rather insufficient as well. She seemed to own three dresses and three blazers in different colors, and she mixed and matched. He’d assumed they were her favorites, but what if she didn’t have the money for more clothing?

He thought it over more as he reached the deli and ordered his sandwich—plus one more for good measure.

It was rude and invasive for him to inquire about her financial situation. She was technically an employee of the temp agency so he didn’t have the authority to raise her salary or give her a bonus. Leaving an anonymous envelope of cash would be too obvious.
